Pres. Evaluation Group – Tuesday @ 8

Posted in Announcements, Campus Issues on January 12, 2008 by sdsathens

Hey everybody,

Just letting you know that the presidential evaluation working group will be meeting Tuesday at 8 p.m. in the common room of Gamertsfelder Hall on East Green. Anyone who didn’t sign up for the working group but who has changed their mind should feel free to show up. We’ll be sitting down to decide exactly what it is that we want to do so that we can bring our plans to the meeting on Thursday.

One crucial point: please show up *AT THE FRONT DOOR* of Gam. I’ll need to let you in and haven’t mastered the art of bilocation yet.

A little post-protest picketing, anyone?

Posted in Announcements, Campus Issues on September 28, 2007 by sdsathens

So for those of you who are still fired up after today’s protest and the super happy chat with Dr. Krendl that followed it, AFSCME Local 1699 will be picketing the football game tomorrow. They’ll be meeting in the Ping parking lot at 10:30 A.M. and then leaving for Peden Stadium at some point after that. I’m pretty sure they said they’d be picketing until 3:00 P.M.

The protest was awesome. Everybody who spoke, worked on signs, worked on the banner, passed out flyers, etc., and everybody who just showed up, made it really effective in my opinion. Whoever came up with the chant deserves a medal. Good job guys. Student power!

Picketing Reminder

Posted in Announcements, Campus Issues on September 24, 2007 by sdsathens

Hey guys, just wanted to remind everyone that AFSCME Local 1699 is still picketing every day outside the College Gateway. I walked by earlier and noticed that there wasn’t anybody from SDS there; I wasn’t sure if the picketing was going on elsewhere today or if it was just a case of nobody being able to make it. Anyway, I know we’re all extremely busy planning for Friday’s protest and I’ve personally been sick and haven’t been able to make it, but they can still really use our support whenever we have the time. I’m going to try to stop by the College Gateway tomorrow for at least an hour or two (probably between 1-3) and it would be great if anyone who has time could join me.

Our Flyer

Posted in Announcements, Campus Issues on September 18, 2007 by sdsathens

This is our flyer, more or less. You may actually see these floating around already since the union has asked if they can start distributing them now and since the OU College Democrats may or may not use some parts of it (but if they do, they assure me that they will credit us). Dave Logan is printing this and I will bring them with me to the picket line tomorrow.

The Post Gets In On the Action

Posted in Announcements, Campus Issues on September 18, 2007 by sdsathens

Hey guys, just wanted to let you know that my web column about the union lay-offs was published in The Post yesterday. Also, Jesse Hathaway has an equally good if not better column in today’s print edition, but it’s also available online.

Your Morning Rage

Posted in Campus Issues on September 14, 2007 by sdsathens

Something else we might want to talk about at the next meeting: Chris Yonker’s gratuitous use of racism in his column for The Post. Like this, from last week’s column:

We have tried everything to keep these crashers [undocumented immigrants] out but they keep sneaking in. They tunnel under our walls, travel in makeshift rafts across the waters and use fake IDs to get in.

And once they get in, these party crashers are bringing down the party. Jobs that once belonged to loyal, hardworking Americans now belong to this scum.

Or this, from today’s column:

It has been but three days since the anniversary [of 9/11] and already the event has likely flown from the minds of many students here at Ohio University. Only 2,191 days since the event itself and most minds in Athens are likely thinking about the weekend’s parties where they will consume an abhorrent amount of alcohol.

What party you should be thinking about is a little-known event where several Pakistanis, Arabs and Saudis are soberly talking about their next plot.

Ashley Diaz, president of the Latino Student Union, has a letter in The Post today calling for Yonker to be fired. I’d imagine there will be more outrage from Arab and Muslim students after today’s column.
